Peugeot Background Peugeot history begins in the 18th century, with Jean Pequignot Peugeot, who built water mills. Peugeot grew to be a diversified company producing kitchen appliances, metal warehouse fixtures, hydraulic equipment, automobiles, motorcycles and, of course, bicycles. The lion appears as Peugeot’s trademark in , designed by Justin Blazer, a Montbeliard gold engraver. The lion symbolized “durablity, suppleness and quickness of steel. The lion also stood for the speed and aggressiveness of the Peugeot company.

Headset Index Steering Headset index steering is a very common phenomena that presents itself as a notched movement of the handlebar in the headset; it’s as if there are index detents controlling the the steering with a preferred home position. If one looks inside the headset, usually at the lower cone, you will be equally spaced dents in the race.

Such was the case recently when a complete chrome-framed bicycle was listed for sale. It was described as a build with frame number Of the history of Herse bicyles from this period Jane Heine writes that in Rene Herse moved his shop to , rue de Courcelles on the periphery of Paris. The German occupation of France was from May so they must have been unsettling times in Paris. As a result small constructeurs, like Herse, could conceivably have escaped the attention of the authorities.
Desbois would become the senior frame builder for the workshop through the war years and into the early fifties. He eventually left the employ of Herse but returned again in On the evidence, the earliest Herse frames, were varied in both their construction and the components used. Also as was usual at the time frames of other origins were often re-finished and re-sold. It is possible too that availability of high end components might have been disrupted by the war. And if this was the case is it possible that, by necessity, in-house design and fabrication of components increased to offset supply problems?
In any event, it is claimed that frame builders like Herse built relatively high numbers of bicycles during the war period. This also implies that there were sufficient customers for such bicycles. Early Herse frames of the war period can be distinguished by, among other features, slightly different lug designs than the later pattern.
The bike was a disaster–a real rust bucket–but as I tore it down, I was astounded to see that it was largely unused and almost completely original. None of the bearings had any visible wear, and even the brake pads, gears, chain, and cable sheaths were ones that came new with the bike. The only nonoriginal part was the saddle; I assume that the original leather one died a moldy death as the bike sat decaying in a series of garages.

I asked Jack to keep the paint very thin and to give it a low-gloss finish. He also mixed the Molteni Orange paint a little darker than what we normally see, which is correct but uncommon because most modern Molteni restorations tend to go with a brighter orange color.
The bright orange is also correct there were many shades on orange during the Molteni years , but I am very happy that this bike has the dark orange because it is unusual, elegant, and very “vintagey” looking. With regard to the decals, it was not my intention to create an identical replica of the brochure bike. Instead I wanted to recreate the look of one of the many Colnago bikes that Eddy raced on while he was on the Molteni team.
His Molteni bikes had many different decal configurations, and the one I chose is based on this former Eddy race bike: This is a photo of the frameset just before I built it up two months ago: The decals I used are from Greg Softley of Cyclomondo nobody else has the quality and selection that he has. I selected the decals and I also applied them myself. I got the idea for this bike about 7 years ago, when I first saw the Colnago brochure.

Miche Sytium AXY Wheels Share Miche may not be as well known through out the worldas some other Italian brands like Campagnolo, but they have been producing bicycle parts for over 90 years. Founded in by Ferdinando Michelin, Miche still manufactures many of its products inside its factory in San Vendemiano, Italy. Over a dozen road wheelsets are on offer, from lightweight climbing hoops to deep full-carbon tubulars, so Miche has something for everybody.
There are 18 straight-pull stainless steel spokes laid out in a standard radial pattern. The remaining 12 spokes are arranged in a two-cross pattern on the drive side of the hub, which sports a 12mm high flange with recesses into which the spokes are inserted laterally. The company is also working on developing several road tubeless wheels, but the Syntium AXY is not among these.
Compared to other parts of the bike, like the bottom bracket, the wheel fittings for road frames have remained fairly static, but there have been some changes in recent years.

While Schwinn often had a reputation for building heavy bikes for kids, the Paramount line had a reputation for finely crafted, relatively light road bikes. That is obviously a great price. The very nice woman selling it was good natured about the low price.

Fri Mar 18, 4: Because they’re a little more conservative and build their kit with longevity and durability in mind. Most would agree that SRAM kit, as great as it is, isn’t as durable. I have extensive use of top groups from both Shimano and Sram will be adding Campy soon and I have settled on Red 22 mechanical as my favorite group for weight but also prefer its simplicity of mechanism and lack of maintenance.
I still have never broken a cable on any Sram shifter. I have broken several on Shimano dating back to 9 speed.
