Mali continues to face significant political and security challenges amidst slow implementation of a peace agreement signed in that aims to resolve the ongoing conflict in northern Mali. A disparate group of political armed groups, militias, bandits, and extremist groups continue to exert influence in wide swathes of Mali north of the Niger river. The Malian government is generally not present in those areas outside of major cities. Travelers should avoid travel to the northern parts of the country because of continuing insecurity and ongoing military operations. The situation in central Mali – in the Segou and Mopti Regions – is increasingly unstable due to intercommunal conflict and localized political violence. Terrorist groups with varying degrees of allegiance to al-Qa’ida and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant ISIL operate in Mali, and often pursue local agendas complementary to these global jihadist movements. These groups have claimed responsibility for recent gun and improvised explosives attacks, kidnappings, and other violent actions in northern and central Mali. Terrorist groups are likely to continue, if not escalate, attacks on Western targets throughout the Sahel including Mali, Burkina Faso, Mauritania, and Niger.

History[ edit ] The club was created in by a fusion of “Africa Sport” Bamako and “Foyer du Soudan”, two successful teams during French Colonial rule. Many critics of Djoliba AC, especially coming from the rival Stade Malien , claim that the strength of the club was built during that period. However, Tiekoro Bagayoko was gone in after his arrest, yet Djoliba kept obtaining titles and cups.
Today, it is reputed to be the biggest and the most organized soccer club in Mali. Their 7 July derby match was postponed to August, and although they lost this match their rivals, Stade faltered where Djoliba were consistent, finishing the season 9 points ahead of Stade.

Situated on the fertile lands of the Niger River Valley, Bamako provided its resident with an abundant food supply because of which the early kingdoms in the area grew wealthy as they established trade routes that linked West Africa to Europe. Aliou Mahamar Toure, the feared former “Islamic police chief” of the city of Gao, appeared in a Bamako court accused of endangering state security and aggravated assault, crimes that rights groups have said did not reflect the gravity of his offences. Victims gave gruesome testimony in court to the jury, which Toure listened to with his head bowed. Afterwards he paraded around with the hands and feet,” one witness said, describing the fate of his brother’s four children.
One person recounted being arrested and drugged by Toure and his henchmen after being accused of stealing. Toure took the stand wearing a traditional white robe in the presence of at least eight of his victims, an AFP journalist at the court said. He told the jury he had not cut the hands and feet himself. At one point Toure said he was “very ill” and asked to be allowed to sit down. Rights groups including the International Federation for Human Rights FIDH and its Malian equivalent said the charge sheet did not mention war crimes or torture, offences they believe Toure committed in his role.
Toure is also accused of firearms offences and criminal conspiracy. He could face up to 20 years in jail if convicted. Toure is also accused of whipping women in public for not wearing sufficiently conservative clothing.

Radio Bamakan – Mali Date: Mali’s first community radio station is also the most popular radio station in Bamako. Its popularity is due to the fact that Radio Bamakan broadcasts most of its programming in national languages, and to the quality of its shows. By professionalism I mean to take into account time constraints, the social context in which we are working, and an understanding of the listeners.
The equipment to get the station running was provided by an Italian NGO, Tierra Nova, but Radio Bamakan found itself in the red before it could even get an operational budget together. It experienced some very difficult financial times, going into debt to install its equipment and conduct technical tests.
